CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
March 12, 1936 - March 9, 2023
Margaret Evelina Dumpson was born in Harlem, New York on March 12, 1936, and entered eternal rest on March 9, 2023.
Born to Reverend Dr John W. and Evelyn G. Banfield-Moses. Stemming from a large family, Margaret was born 8th of her 9 siblings. Those special relationships further extended the family with 52 nieces and nephews!
Margaret grew up in Glen Cove, L.I, NY where she graduated from Glen Cove High School (1953). In that same city, she would meet her late husband, Alfred H. Dumpson Sr. in 1946 through her older brother John, who was married to Alfred’s older sister Frances. That introduction blossomed into a courtship that led to their marriage on June 22, 1956. They later moved to Westbury NY where they purchased their first home together (circa 1959) During their 41 years together they had 5 children, Cynthia, Alfred Jr., Valerie, Alvina, and Evelina.
Margaret was very skilled and held various jobs ranging from learning the knowledge of shorthand for status reports to being a check processor at a Federal Reserve Bank. However, her longest job was her 30 year career at the United States Department of Treasury. During her tenure at the US Treasury, she was an outstanding collection agent in the audit division, while working in the Long Island appeals department, ultimately retiring as a Supervisor from that same department in 1993.
Margaret was also a true servant of the Lord. During her life, she demonstrated unlimited compassion towards others by always greeting them with her infectious smile. She also had a wonderful loyal spirit that lead her to be affectionately called several names other than Grandma by her family (Little John, Mudge, GaGa, Marguerite, Mama D). Being a devout christian, Margaret sought fellowship wherever she lived, those churches include: Calvary AME Church – Glen Cove NY, Bethel AME Church – Westbury NY (Secretary), Mount Pisgah AME – Greenwood South Carolina, New Covenant Bibleway Church – Charlotte, NC (Mother of Church).
Margaret is survived by her brother David (sister-in-law Laverne) Moses, 5 children and their spouses Cynthia R. Dumpson-Bingham, Alfred H. Dumpson Jr., Valerie S. Anderson, Alvina M. Dumpson, Evelina J.
