John Sees Jr. Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

January 6, 1960 - September 27, 2025

John Charles Sees Jr., born January 6, 1960, passed away September 27, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 65 years old.

John was the fourth child born to John Charles and Eva-Maria Christa Sees. Raised in Dugway, Utah, and Colorado Springs, CO, he spent much of his youth bike riding, hunting for tadpoles, catching bugs, and playing games with his siblings. He loved to laugh and was always the life of the party, even in childhood. He enjoyed playing football and wrestling and excelled in his studies.

John loved his daughters Janin and Sandra dearly. He never missed an opportunity to talk about them to friends, family and colleagues, and was very proud of their accomplishments. Throughout their childhood he taught them virtues such as perseverance, standing up for what is right, and striving for greatness. These virtues helped his daughters with their studies in the university as well as excel in their jobs.

If John was not working, he loved to be hands-on and active. He loved fixing things and taking care of his motorcycle. He enjoyed working in the garden, visiting national parks and going swimming, especially when he had his daughters at his side.

In July 2021, John became a granddad to Levi Nemmert (Coburg, Germany). In May 2024, his second grandchild, Julie, was born. John enjoyed face-timing often with his daughter, son-in-law, Daniel, and his grandkids. When visiting his family in Germany, Opa John enjoyed attending the children’s gymnastics practice, time playing with them in the swimming pool, grocery shopping, and playing at a dinosaur park. The evenings were reserved to jam to "My Hero" from the Foo Fighters with his grandson Levi. John was lead guitarist and Levi was on the drums.

A devoted patriot, John dedicated his life to service in the United States Army, where he distinguished himself through honor, leadership, and integrity, retiring as a Colonel. He earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout award as a teenager.  Over the course of his military career, he served at a variety of duty stations including Fort McClellan, Alabama; the Republic of Germany; Austin, Texas; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and the Military District of Washington, D.C. His leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on all who served with him.

John’s distinguished service was recognized with numerous commendations, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award), the Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award), the Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award), the National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

His commitment to excellence extended to his education. John earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame, a Master’s Degree in Operations Management from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in Operations Research and Systems Analysis from George Mason University. He further advanced his professional knowledge through military education, highlighted by completing the Army’s Basic Airborne Course, the Chemical Corps Officers Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Resident Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College.

Following his retirement from active duty, John embarked on a second career as an analyst, serving both as a government employee and as an independent contractor. Specializing in operations research and systems analysis within the federal government in Washington, D.C., he continued to apply his expertise and dedication to improving organizational effectiveness and national security.

John will be remembered not only for his decorated career but also for his deep sense of duty, intellect, and dedication to those he served alongside. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service, and love of country that will not be forgotten.

John was a man of faith and a devoted member of Elevations Church in Mint Hill, North Carolina, where he found fellowship, strength, and community. He was a faithful member of his bible study group and enjoyed learning about Jesus, applying that to his life. He found peace in this group, in prayer, and in God.

He is survived by siblings Mary Pritchard (Zip), Ralph Sees, Cathy Sees (Jerry), daughters Janin Sees, Sandra Nemmert (Daniel), and grandchildren Levi and Julie Nemmert.

A memorial service will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado in the summer of 2026. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery outside Denver, Colorado.

We will forever cherish these memories of our brother, father, grandfather, and distinguished military servant who loved his family and country deeply. The loss to our family is indescribable and leaves us with a great hole which only God and time will heal. We are comforted by knowing he is with our Heavenly Father. John will always be in our hearts and may he rest in peace.
