HUNTERSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
December 23, 1928 - October 2, 2021
Helen Canty 92, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021.
Helen Canty, 92, passed away peacefully on October 2nd with her daughter at her side in Huntersville, NC.
Helen always loved people and loved helping others. Her willingness to be of service started early in life. As a girl scout during World War II, she volunteered to watch the skies and report any potential enemy planes. She fondly recalled how, even though she was a young girl, she could make a contribution to the country.
After graduating from high school, Helen chose to enter the nursing profession and felt honored to call herself a registered nurse. She always performed her nursing duties with a deep sense of kindness and compassion. She was an outstanding scholar and was inducted into the National Honor Society and also was awarded the Pro Merito pin for scholastic achievement.
Her faith was always a very important part of her life. Helen spent many years volunteering at her church helping out wherever needed. In addition to doing the readings at Mass, she also took great joy in serving as a Eucharistic Minister.
Helen loved all things Irish and cherished the memories of her trips to Ireland with her daughter. While there, she kissed the Blarney Stone which gives the gift of gab. She always loved talking with people and spent countless hours chatting and enjoying the company of her friends.
For several years, Helen enjoyed the camaraderie of her bowling team where she served as Co-Captain. She also enjoyed many years in the golf league where she was known for her adept putting skills. She had many golf friends and enjoyed playing in numerous tournaments over the years. Bingo, ice cream socials, musical entertainment, and rides around town were among her favorite activities in the past few years.
Helen had a real affinity for music. She could often be heard singing some of her favorite tunes while doing her daily tasks. She had a lovely voice on earth and is now singing with the angels in heaven.
Helen will be remembered for her playful sense of humor, the sparkle in her eyes, her strength, independence and stubborn streak, and her generous spirit and kind soul.
She will be dearly missed by her daughter, best friend, confidante, and travel companion, Kathleen Canty of Huntersville, NC. Helen was predeceased by her husband Cyril and daughter Beth Canty. She leaves two sons, Kevin Canty and daughter-in-law Kristina Canty of North Grosvenordale, CT, Dennis Canty of Quinebaug, CT and a granddaughter, Amy Canty.
Helen also leaves behind a special angel on earth, Pam Lostimolo, who immeasurably contributed to making her life special and helping ensure that her final chapter in life was filled with love.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region and at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville. Their compassion will never be forgotten.
