CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
October 15, 1966 - February 26, 2023
Fredrick Joseph Hutchinson passed away on Sunday, February 26th, 2023, in Charlotte, NC at the age of 56. He was born in Charlotte on October 15, 1966, to the late Fred Knox Hutchinson and Patricia (Pat) Harris Hutchinson.
After graduating from East Gaston High School, Mt. Holly, in 1985, Fredrick (Fred) attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte where he studied sound engineering. He later attended Appalachian State University in Boone, where he earned his BA in English. While in Boone, he developed a love for rock climbing, mountain biking and snowboarding. He remained adept at these activities throughout his life, but rock climbing reigned supreme. In 2019, he even competed and placed 4th in his division in 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell, an endurance climbing competition in Arkansas. Climbing also took him to many scenic places, including a recent month-long trip to El Potrero Chico, Mexico.
At an early age Fred learned to skateboard, and it was also a passion he followed his whole life. He enjoyed teaching his skateboarding skills to others and did so through Charlotte Parks and Recreation for several years.
Music also became a driving force at an early age. He learned to play the guitar, joining his first band while in high school and touring the US right out of high school. As a talented musician, Fred played guitar and drums. He was a member in numerous rock/punk bands throughout his life: Subculture, Husbians, Social Savagery, Sewer Puppet, Judas Bullethead, Jody Foster’s Armpit, Pig ****er, Thirty Foot Beast, Boil, Men of Leisure, Fran Hammer, Smoking Rocks, Buzzoven and Poontanglers.
On April 4, 2003, he married his life partner, Kimberly Rae McFadden, at the justice of the peace, and they had a raucous wedding celebration on October 31, 2003. They raised three beautiful children together in a very loving environment, teaching them a love of art, music, rock climbing, skateboarding, and sailing. Fred was a gentle and kind soul who loved generously, had an amazing sense of humor, and was much loved by his friends and family. Most also knew him as an avid reader and film buff who enjoyed discussing a wide variety of books and movies.
Fred worked for many years as a talented screen printer, graphic artist, and sign installer for numerous companies in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas. He was a dedicated employee, well respected by his peers and acknowledged as a tremendously helpful and delightful coworker. Fred is profoundly missed, and his legacy will live on in his talented children, the recordings of his music, the impression he left on us all and his gifts as an organ donor.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Pat Hutchinson; paternal grandparents, Armen Elwyn and Mary Hutchinson; and maternal grandparents Hiram and Margaret Harris. He leaves behind his children: Elwin, Nora, and June with his wife of almost 20 years, Kim; sister Jane Hutchinson-Barefoot (Bill) and nieces Olivia Rae and Lily; and sister Ann DeStaercke (Gildas) and niece and nephew Chloe and Gabin. He is also survived by one aunt, Mary Joanna Hutchinson, and numerous cousins.
A service to celebrate Fred’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23 at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Charlotte, 234 N. Sharon Amity Road. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
