Alan Harmon Obituary

Charlotte, North Carolina

November 27, 1947 - March 02, 2025

Alan Keith Harmon was born to Willie and Evelyn Alexander Harmon on November 27, 1947, which was also his father’s birthday. He was born at Good Samaritan Hospital which at that time, was the hospital for colored people, and was the fourth of five children: William Wesley, Verna Deane, Linda Marie; and Bruce Carlton who passed after only a week of life. As a family, they attended Second Calvary Church, where he was baptized as a child. The extended family was very important. Cousins shared more of a brother/sister relationship.

Alan graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1966. He kept close ties with many of his classmates until his passing. He matriculated at Johnson C. Smith University until the US Army drafted him where he served in Vietnam as part of the clerical pool from 1967-1969. He was honorably discharged and was proud of often being recognized as having the best-looking uniform and polished boots during inspections.

While at JCSU, Alan joined the civil rights movement by participating in sit-ins at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Charlotte. He was jailed a few times but persisted and continued to fight the good fight.

He lived life on his terms and in 1975, he relocated to Washington, DC. Alan was a member of the “Cattleman’s Association” (not ranchers, but a group formed by friends). He also belonged to “The Jalapenos”, who won the Annual Chili Cook-Off sponsored by radio station DC101. They also placed a couple of other times throughout the competition.

Alan worked in administration as a bookkeeper, a customer service representative, and a collections agent. Once, he called one of his nieces to inform her that her file was assigned to him. He then called her back, in a professional capacity.

Alan was preceded in death by both parents, his older brother Dr. William Harmon and his wife, Beverly; Linda Raffety (Robert); baby brother Bruce Carlton; Aunts: Gladys Massey and her husband John; Julia Ingram and husband, Samuel; Mozell Harmon Mack; and Mildred Alexander: Uncles: Charles, Harold, and Elihue Alexander, Jr.; Vernon Alexander and wife, Laura; Travis Alexander and wife, Edna; and Cousins: Sharon Cassell Bowman, Darryl Cassell, LaSherri Alexander, and Vincent Alexander.

He is survived by his sister, Verna Bradford Isler (Marshall); nieces and nephews: Eugenia “Gina” Prince (Wayne Kevin); Mwangi Eric Kwesi; Hilary Harmon Green, Esq.; Christi Bradford Johnson; Dr. Regan Sales, DDS (Christopher); Jermaine Raffety; and great nieces and nephews: Zuri, Mykai, and Zion Kwesi; Christopher Green; Deeanna Johnson; and Camille, Morgan and Christopher Sales, Jr.; along with many other friends.

It sounds cliché, but he was truly, deeply loved. The bottom line is once you met him and heard that raucous laughter that tickled your spirit, you would never forget him. He was the life of the party everywhere he went. He was quick-witted and sharp-tongued. The combination made interactions fun and exciting.
